Historically, one of the pivotal engagements in the region to occur during the War of independence occurred at nearby Minisink in July 1779 as colonists fought against royalist forces led by Mohawk war chief Joseph Brant.  During the 19th Century Civil Engineer John A. Roebling, instrumental in building the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City constructed the Roebling aquaduct (now bridge) just a couple of miles from Barryville which visitors can drive across today.

One of leaders of the Gilded Age, Cornelius Vanderbilt, known as “the commodore” for his vast transportation empire, had a 25 by 15 foot pavement crafted from a single piece of stone weighing some 44,000 pounds hewn in Barryville for his Fifth Avenue mansion.

Author of the 1912 western classic, Riders of the Purple Sage, Zane Grey lived in the area.

However, for all the historical provenance of the area, our locality is part of the future as well as playing host to important historical events which have shaped our State.  We have an award winning Music center at the local Eldred High School. The Hillside Schoolhouse B&B was recognized by prestigious travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler on their annual review of the best places to visit in the World.  Over the river, in nearby Pennsylvania, Woodloch Spa is rated in the top three spa destinations in the World, not to mention their golf course.  Upstream, the confluence of the East and West branches of the Delaware near the town of Hancock offers us what is regarded as one of the best fly-fishing experiences on the East Coast USA.
